Description from the seller

Green ‘Dragon’ leather tabako-ire with silver mounts

Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615–1868)
This tabako-ire (tobacco bag) is made from spinach-green leather with subtle color variations. The whole is adorned with finely worked shakudo silver kanamono, on which a gracefully winding dragon is depicted with meticulously detailed scales.

The pouch hangs from a chain consisting of a peony medallion and five metal links, as well as a shell-shaped pendant decorated with waves and clouds. The whole ends in a boldly carved ivory netsuke manju, carefully executed with another dragon motif.

Accompanying is a matching leather pipe case in the same green patinated leather, complete with a silver pipe.

Pouch length: 11 cm
Pipe-case height: 26.3 cm
Total length: 26 cm

Condition: Very good condition with light signs of use and some tarnish on the silver. The netsuke shows natural imperfections and a few age cracks.

Provenance: Austrian private collection
