【Product details】

This impressive Showa-era ceramic lidded jar by the multi-disciplinary Japanese artist Sakata Jinnai (坂田甚内) is a powerful sculptural vessel, distinguished by its bold architectural shape and refined surface design. The form is built in an octagonal, tiered structure, creating a dignified silhouette reminiscent of classical Japanese architecture.

It is finished in a soft lilac-toned glaze on the exterior, giving it a calm and contemporary presence, while Sakata’s signature “Shinjin-mon” motif is rendered in delicate low relief across every panel and the lid, creating a refined interplay of light and shadow with added depth and movement, further enhanced by scattered gold leaf accents that bring an elegant touch of brilliance to the surface.

Opening the lid reveals a striking contrast inside. The interior base is finished in a metallic, shimmering emerald green, densely sprinkled with multi-coloured glitter in red, blue, and silver. This vivid, jewel-like effect creates a richly vibrant and glamorous impression, highlighting Sakata’s playful sense of colour and his ability to merge calm form with unexpected intensity. The base bears the artist’s impressed seal mark “甚” (Jin).

Mashiko ware is a traditional Japanese pottery made in Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture, with origins dating back to the late Edo period. It is especially valued for its rustic character, substantial thickness, and warm, handcrafted feel that highlights the natural texture of the clay.

Sakata Jinnai is a distinguished contemporary Japanese artist. After studying under Kamoda Shoji in 1964, he established his kiln in Mashiko in 1966 and gained renown for his innovative black pottery. Since 1971, he has held numerous solo exhibitions in Japan and abroad, including at Takashimaya, Seibu, Green Gallery, New York (1994), Shanghai (2009), and the Xi’an World Horticultural Expo (2011). His artistic scope later expanded into washi paper (1995), glass (2000), LED lighting (2003), hyper-powered drawing (2006), and bonsai pots (2007). In 2013–2014, he dedicated works to Izumo Taisha, Ise Jingu, and Atsuta Jingu. His creations frequently explore cosmic and natural motifs, and are featured in publications such as MOKU and Harmony.
