Description from the seller
Jan Sierhuis – Gitana (2014)
Gitana (2014) is an oil painting by Jan Sierhuis in which he captures the passion, movement and rhythm of the Spanish dance and culture. With strong lines, vivid colors and expressive forms he conveys the dynamics of the Gypsy dancer, making the work feel almost musical and bringing the energy of the movement to life.
After the war, Jan Sierhuis developed into an expressionist painter, influenced among others by Van Gogh, Matisse and Picasso. Together with Appel, Corneille and Lucebert he found himself at the heart of post-war developments in art.
In 1945 Sierhuis was admitted to the evening program of the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, which he left after a conflict. In 1947 he was involved with the group of the Experimentelen and in 1948 with the CoBrA group, although he was too young to become an official member. Later, in 1962 he was co-founder of the Amsterdam artists’ group Groep Scorpio.
In the 1950s and 1960s Sierhuis worked mainly abstract. Thereafter he returned to the human figure and shifted his attention to figurative themes such as dancing figures, portraits and landscapes. He spent many summers in Spain, where his passion for flamenco had a great influence on his work. This dance embodies everything that characterizes his painting: color, emotion, movement and rhythm.
Sierhuis has always gone his own way. Freedom and expressiveness form the through line in his oeuvre.
Dimensions of the work without a frame: 180 x 100 cm
Viewing is, of course, possible. In addition we have our own in-house framer, who is celebrating his 85th anniversary year. Furthermore we make use of restorers from the professional association: 'Restauratoren Nederland'. If you would like to make use of this, we would of course be happy to hear from you.
