Description from the seller
The Absurd Ritual is a 70 × 100 cm painting by contemporary artist Ernest García.
This painting presents itself as a scene suspended between the metaphysical and the theatrical, where five nude figures inhabit an impossible architectural space, open to a landscape of water and mountains that seems as real as it is mental. The composition constructs a symbolic stage where gesture, color, and spatial arrangement replace traditional narrative.
The figures, outlined with clearly marked contours and unnatural chromatisms — acid greens, incendiary reds, vibrant yellows — do not represent bodies but presences. There is no defined psychological individuality; their faces are masks, their postures evoke a ceremony without clear rules. Nudity is not erotic, but archetypal: stripped of time, identity, and context.
Architectural space recalls the metaphysical atmospheres of the early twentieth century: doors ajar that lead nowhere concrete, long shadows, ambiguous perspectives. Yet the background landscape introduces a lyrical depth that contrasts with the darkness of the foreground. The figures seem trapped in a liminal zone between the earthly and the symbolic.
At the top, a red rose floats above the scene like an emblem. It does not belong to the physical world of the figures; it is a sign. Its disproportionate scale and central position reinforce the sense of poetic absurdity. The rose can be read as a symbol of desire, of sacrifice, or of unattainable beauty, but its suspension in the sky makes it a metaphysical object more than natural.
Color is the absolute protagonist. The Fauvist intensity does not seek to describe reality, but to alter its perception. The opposition between the warm tones of the figures and the deep blue of the sky creates an almost electric vibration, generating emotional tension in the viewer. The contrast between the dark space of the ground and the clarity of the horizon suggests a duality between consciousness and transcendence.
“The Absurd Ritual” poses a reflection on the human condition as a repeated and enigmatic act. The figures seem to participate in a ceremony whose meaning they do not know, trapped in a silent choreography. The work offers no answers; it proposes an atmosphere. And in that atmosphere lies its power: a scene that oscillates between the dreamlike, the symbolic, and the philosophical.
A piece with a strong conceptual character and striking visual impact, where radical color and metaphysical spatial construction converge to create an image that is profoundly contemporary and disturbingly timeless.
