Authentic copper and brass bulkhead telegraph by J.W. Ray & Co. (Liverpool) Ltd, dating to the first half of the 20th century, with a 19 cm diameter, 11 cm depth and 24 cm width including the lever, in used condition with patina and a side opening exposing the internal mechanism.
Description from the seller
For sale: an authentic copper/brass marine telegraph from the well-known British manufacturer J.W. Ray & Co. (Liverpool) Ltd. This type of instrument, also called a 'bulkhead telegraph', was mounted on the bridge to convey commands between captain and engineer.
Details:
Perforated dial: A feature of this example is the dial with perforated letters (backlit dial). This was probably done so that the commands could be illuminated from behind at night.
Mechanical: The telegraph is equipped with two levers. The left lever is fully functional and emits the characteristic bright 'ping' from the internal bell when shifted. The right lever moves smoothly through the positions (Full, Half, Slow, etc.) but currently does not ring the bell.
Patina: The object has a beautiful, untouched patina that wonderfully reflects decades at sea.
Condition:
The item is in an honest, used condition with clear signs of aging. On the side there is an opening in the housing (see photos), through which the internal mechanism (gears and springs) is partly visible. This offers a unique insight into early maritime technology, or provides the option to easily install internal (LED) lighting to illuminate the perforated dial.
The dials front and back are currently not aligned.
Specifications:
Manufacturer: J.W. Ray & Co. (Liverpool) Ltd.
Material: Heavy brass/cast copper.
Origin: United Kingdom.
Dimensions: diameter 19 cm, depth 11 cm, width including lever 24 cm
A nice collectibles object for the enthusiast or hobbyist of nautical antiquities or as a unique statement piece in a modern interior.
