Description from the seller
Jan Sierhuis – The Chair (1993)
The Chair is a painting by Jan Sierhuis in which he places an apparently simple object; a chair at the center. With bold brushstrokes, solid forms and an expressive use of color, he gives the everyday object an intense presence. The work emphasizes the tactile nature and character of the chair, making the ordinary feel almost monumental and inviting the viewer to reflect on the meaning and existence of everyday objects.
After the war, Jan Sierhuis developed into an expressionist painter, influenced, among others, by Van Gogh, Matisse and Picasso. Together with Appel, Corneille and Lucebert he found himself at the heart of postwar developments in art.
In 1945 Sierhuis was admitted to the evening program of the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten. In 1947 he was involved with the group of the Experimentelen and in 1948 with the CoBrA group, though he was too young to become an official member. Later, in 1962, he was co-founder of the Amsterdam-based artists' group Groep Scorpio.
In the fifties and sixties Sierhuis mainly worked abstractly. Afterwards he returned to the human figure and shifted his attention to figurative themes such as dancing figures, portraits and landscapes. He spent many summers in Spain, where his passion for flamenco had a major influence on his work. This dance embodies everything that characterizes his painting: color, emotion, movement and rhythm. Sierhuis has always gone his own way. Freedom and expressiveness form the through line in his oeuvre.
Dimensions of the work with frame: 104 x 84 cm
Dimensions of the work without frame: 100 x 80 cm
Viewing is, of course, possible. In addition we have our own in-house framing workshop, which is celebrating its 85th anniversary year. Furthermore we make use of restorers from the professional association: 'Restauratoren Nederland'. If you would like to make use of this, of course we would be happy to hear.
