René Burri (1933–2014) was a Swiss photographer living and working in Paris and Zurich,
Member of the Magnum agency since 1959.

In 1949, René Burri enrolled at the Zurich School of Applied Arts. He graduated four years later.
Later, in 1953, he opens a workshop with Walker Binder. In 1954 and 1955, Burri works as
camera assistant for Walt Disney Film Production in Switzerland. Initially attracted by
the documentary cinema that will influence him later, his photos operate in a series and
They tell a story, and he ultimately turns toward photography.

Unlike his mentor Henri Cartier-Bresson, who captures the 'decisive moment', Burri works
more in the long term, as his first book The Germans demonstrates, or there
the publication of his report on the last gauchos of Argentina.

In the 1950s, he worked for major magazines, especially Life.
Burri photographed almost all the major events of the time: the Korean War.
then the Vietnam one, the Cuban crisis and Latin America (where he notably photographs
Che Guevara and Fidel Castro), the economic and cultural upheavals in China, in
South America or in Europe.
