Description from the seller

Title
Kumi Sugai (1919–1996) – “SOLEIL (Sun)” – Original Lithograph – Hand Signed & Numbered 34/99

Description

This is an original lithograph by Kumi Sugai (1919–1996), one of the most internationally acclaimed Japanese artists of the post-war period.

Sugai was a central figure of the École de Paris and became widely known for his distinctive fusion of traditional Japanese sensibility and modern geometric abstraction. After moving to Paris in 1952, he developed a powerful visual language characterized by bold contours, dynamic curves, and striking chromatic contrasts.

Titled “SOLEIL (Sun)”, this work perfectly embodies Sugai’s mature style.
The composition presents a compelling dialogue between:
• a dark, organic crescent form
• a rhythmic, bright orange S-curve
• a refined grey-blue hatched background

The contrast between organic texture and geometric precision creates a balanced yet dynamic visual tension, demonstrating Sugai’s mastery of abstraction and graphic impact.

Sugai’s works are included in major museum collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, and the Centre Pompidou, Paris. His limited edition prints remain highly sought after for their historical importance and timeless modern aesthetic.
