Ennio Calabria (Tripoli, March 7, 1937 – Rome, March 1, 2024) was an Italian painter and illustrator.

Born in Tripoli on March 7, 1937, Ennio Calabria was an Italian artist and intellectual, a representative of European figurativism.[2][3] He worked as an illustrator of stories, book covers, poetry works and posters.[4][5]

In 1958 he held his first solo show at the La Feluca Gallery in Rome.[6][7] In 1959 he participated in the exhibitions of the VIII Quadriennale of Rome. Following this initial participation were those of 1972, 1986 and 1999.[8]

In 1961 he became part of that circle of artists (Renzo Vespignani, Ugo Attardi, Fernando Farulli, Piero Guccione and Alberto Gianquinto) who, together with art critics Antonio Del Guercio, Dario Micacchi and Morosini, gave life to the group called Il pro e il contro, a reference point for research in the field of figurative painting.[10]

In 1963 one of his works was exhibited at the Contemporary Italian Paintings show, staged in several Australian cities.[11] In 1963-1964 he exhibited at the show Peintures italiennes d'aujourd'hui, organized in the Middle East and North Africa.[12] In 1964 he took part in the Venice Biennale.

His first retrospective was held in 1985 in Milan, at the Rotonda della Besana[14]; a second took place in 1987 in Rome, at Castel Sant'Angelo.[15] Around the same period, there was also the publication, published by Vangelista of Milan, of a monograph edited by Carandente and Mario De Micheli[16], later followed by a second edition with the added collaboration of art critic Dario Micacchi.[17]

In 2008 he mounted the solo show La luce e la forma at the Granelli Gallery in Livorno[18] and in 2009 the solo show La forma da dentro at the Luciana Matalon Foundation in Milan[19], a show later presented at Villa Paolina Bonaparte in Viareggio.[20]

In 2015 he again participated in the Venice Biennale, in the Guatemala national pavilion Sweet Death.[21]

In 2018 Palazzo Cipolla in Rome dedicated to him the retrospective Ennio Calabria. Verso il tempo dell'essere. Opere 1958-2018, curated by Gabriele Simongini.[22]

He died in Rome on March 1, 2024, six days before his 87th birthday.[1]
