Description from the seller

Title: Multicolor Vase

School: Italian (20th century)

Author: Antonio Selvaggio Mancini (1921 - 2008)

Style: Impressionist

Technique: Oil on canvas

About the author:

Antonio Selvaccio Mancini (Barcelona, 1921) was a painter trained at the Escola de la Llotja, where he studied drawing, completing his apprenticeship later as a pupil of Joaquim Asensio and, further on, of Rafael Benet, who guided him toward the study of the great Impressionist masters. He debuted individually in 1947 at the Galerías Pallarés in Barcelona and developed a solid exhibition career in cities such as Vigo, Ripoll, Málaga and Barcelona (Galerías Círculo Italiano and Andreu Canuda), exhibiting regularly since 1977 at Sala Bargalló. He also participated in numerous group exhibitions and competitions, obtaining various prizes. His work, fundamentally landscape, evolved from the initial influence of the Olot school toward a more personal language, characterized by a marked atmospheric sensitivity, chromatic intensification and a more generous use of impasto. He also cultivated still life and floral themes, where he expressed a looser and more expressionist character. At times he signed with his second surname, Mancini. His work has been auctioned in venues such as Galartis and Galerie du Rhône (Switzerland), Bernd Rieber (Stuttgart), Goya y Durán (Madrid), as well as Balclis, Lamas Bolaño, Brok, Subarna (Barcelona) and Gran Vía (Bilbao).

The composition depicts an exuberant floral bouquet arranged in a light-toned ceramic vase with subtle bluish nuances. The ensemble is formed by roses at different stages of bloom —in pinks, whites and reddish tones— accompanied by small yellow flowers and purplish clusters that add depth and chromatic contrast.

The brushwork is loose and impasted, with an atmospheric treatment of the background in grayish and mauve tones that enhance the volume of the floral arrangement. The play of light and shadow creates a sense of movement and freshness, while the layering of paint yields material richness. The work maintains a balanced, centered, and vertical composition, characteristic of decorative floral still lifes of the 20th century.

The work is presented framed in a golden wooden frame, with a molded and stepped profile, finished in a satin gold tone. It has a classical structure with well-defined inner and outer moldings, which add elegance and enhance the overall pictorial set. The general condition is good, in line with its age.

Observations:
The work shows good overall conservation for its age.
