Description from the seller
Klaas Sans (Sappemeer, 1927) is a versatile Dutch artist best known for his paintings, etchings and wood engravings. He pursued his studies in Paris at the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, the Académie Ranson, and in the workshop of Stanley William Hayter. His career then took him to various international art centres, including Groningen, Canada, Paris and later The Hague, where he also worked for many years as a teacher of drawing, painting and art history.
Sans's work moves between figuration and semi-abstractity. His visual language is poetic and sensitive, often arising from personal experiences, encounters and observations. Literature, philosophy and the great modernists such as Cézanne and Mondrian are important sources of inspiration within his oeuvre. Sans regards art as a continual dialogue with the world around him — not a matter of style or taste, but a form of learning, remembering and rediscovering.
His work has been exhibited both in the Netherlands and abroad, including in the Netherlands, Germany, France, the United States, Cuba and the former Yugoslavia. Works by Klaas Sans are held in both private collections and museum collections, including the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
The painting offered here is a fully original work by Klaas Sans and comes from the collection of the Municipality of The Hague. This not only guarantees authenticity, but also underscores the cultural and art-historical value of the work within his oeuvre.
