Description from the seller
Freek van den Berg (1918–2000) was a Dutch painter, often described as the last Dutch Fauvist. His work is characterized by a strong use of color, expressive brushwork, and a preference for landscapes, figures, and cityscapes. Although largely self-taught, he was taught in his youth by, among others, Frits Giltay. He drew heavy inspiration from French Fauves such as Kees van Dongen, Matisse, and Derain.
In addition to his work as a painter, Van den Berg was also active as an art critic for, among others, Het Parool and Vrij Nederland. In 1985 he moved to the village of Veessen on the IJssel, where his work took on a lighter and calmer tone, influenced by the river landscape. Freek van den Berg developed a recognizable style that balances between Fauvism, Impressionism, and Expressionism, and left behind a colorful oeuvre that is still beloved by collectors.
