Description from the seller
Freek van den Berg (1918–2000) was a Dutch painter, often described as the last Dutch Fauvist. His work is characterized by bold use of color, expressive brushwork, and a preference for landscapes, figures, and cityscapes. Although largely self-taught, he was taught in his youth by, among others, Frits Giltay. He drew strong inspiration from French Fauves such as Kees van Dongen, Matisse, and Derain.
In addition to his work as a painter, Van den Berg was also active as an art critic for, among others, Het Parool and Vrij Nederland. In 1985 he moved to the village Veessen aan de IJssel, where his work took on a lighter and more tranquil tone, influenced by the river landscape. Freek van den Berg developed a recognizable style that balances between Fauvism, Impressionism and Expressionism, leaving behind a colorful oeuvre that is still cherished by collectors.
