Description from the seller

Important painting from a collection

Takahashi Shu (1930 - 1987)

Composition / mixed media, ink on paper

small gouache with ink by the great Japanese master (1930), 1960s cm,11x8.5 + the folder containing it stamped in Japanese characters, work signed and original

Shu Takahashi
Born in Shin-ichi-cho, Hiroshima, in 1930
lives and works in Rome since 1963 and since 1966 is a professor at the University of Arts and Sciences of Kurashiki.
Because of the war in 1944 he interrupted his studies, resumed in 1950, when he enrolled at the Musashino Art School in Tokyo. To support himself he did humble jobs and left the school.
Kotaro Midorikawa would call him back into the environment, in a show organized by the avant-garde association Dokuritsu Bijutsu, where he was a painting mentor.
He formed in his country with other artists the Nouveau Group, aimed at revolutionizing the visual language.
In 1956 his first solo show took place (Tokyo, Maruzen Gallery); he frequented the painter Morisuke Komoda and the engraver Tetsuro Komai.
He received the Dokuritsu Prize and his Moon Road was acquired by the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, which awarded the Yasui Prize for young artists to the work (1961).
With a fellowship he attended courses at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome (1963).
His is a spiritual abstraction, with bright colors, that recalls Eastern philosophical traditions. “I rediscovered the ancient Japanese art Rinpa which I consider, in its solemnity and splendor, the first original artistic expression in the history of Japanese art,” he explains.
In 1966 he staged his first solo show at the Galleria del Cavallino in Venice and exhibited some works in Fukuyama (Tenmaya Gallery).
In 1968 he appeared in several exhibitions in his homeland.
He became known in Italy and from ’69 he established a continuous relationship with the Galleria dell’Ariete in Milan.
Giulio Carlo Argan, in ’71, wrote: “The secret of Takahashi’s refined coloristic juxtapositions lies in the fact that the different qualities cannot combine but can only modulate one another through the drawing of their limits, that is, by composing themselves as formal, plastic entities.”
After returning to Japan (1970) he returned to Rome.
He took part in the Venice Biennale of 1976, in the Roman Quadriennale of 1977 and the intense artistic activity of the seventies also includes two monumental decorations (enamel and mixed media on canvas) on the exterior of the medieval Baptistery of Volterra (later presented at the Tyler School in Rome), as well as the mural painting for Taiko Sogo Bank in Yokohama.
The year 1980 opens with a solo show at the Galleria Editalia (now Edieuropa) in Rome, presented by Nello Ponente.
Although he moved to the countryside, near Ardea, the artist often returns to Japan for exhibitions or to undertake major commissions (mural paintings in the Meeting Room of the Kumamoto Craft Museum; enormous square sculptures, such as Departure for the Future in Tokyo, The Arch of Love in Fukuyama, 1988 and the Ascension in his birthplace, 1992).
Among the exhibitions, a retrospective at GNAM in Rome (1993) and the 2003-2004 survey at the Edoardo Chiossone Museum of Oriental Art, in Genoa, are noteworthy.
