Description from the seller
Flowers and Apples on a White Tablecloth
1. TECHNICAL DATA
Title: Flowers and Apples on a White Tablecloth
Author: Omedes (Catalan School, active in the second half of the 20th century)
Chronology: c. 1960–1980
Technique: Oil on canvas
Measurements: 55 × 46 cm (work) · 57 × 48 cm (with frame)
Style: Post-Impressionism / Lyrical Expressionism
Conservation status: Very good; firm impasto, stable chromaticity and period wooden frame in dark wood
2. COMPOSITIONAL AND ICONOGRAPHIC DESCRIPTION
The work presents an intimate still life, structured around two main centers: on the left, a ceramic vase with pink flowers rendered with loose, vertical strokes; on the right, a bowl with apples arranged on a white tablecloth, treated with broad and vibrant brushwork.
The dark, deep background intensifies the chromatic contrast, making the volumes emerge more through color than through drawing. The artist prioritizes the pictorial sensation over literal description, using visible impasto and a palette rich in greens, carmines, ochres and warm whites.
Iconographically, the scene alludes to the classic theme of the domestic still life, understood here as a space of balance, silence and contemplation, where everyday objects are charged with emotional resonance.
3. STYLE, SCHOOL AND COMPARATIVE APPRAISAL
This canvas clearly sits within the tradition of the postwar Catalan school, heir to Post-Impressionism and to moderate Expressionism. The gestural brushwork and the prominence of color evoke affinities with Joaquim Mir, Isidre Nonell, or, in a more intimate register, with Ramon Rogent and certain late still lifes by Maurice de Vlaminck.
The work stands out for its compositional balance, its chromatic freshness and its honest and direct execution, qualities highly valued in Catalan painting of the second half of the 20th century. It is a work of notable decorative and pictorial quality, representative of a mature and personal language within the Catalan art scene of the moment.
