Christo:
Christo, born Christo Vladimirov Javacheff on June 13, 1935 in Gabrovo, Bulgaria, and died May 31, 2020 in New York City, was a world-renowned artist best known for his large-scale wrapping projects. Together with his wife Jeanne-Claude, born June 13, 1935 in Casablanca, Morocco, he created some of the most iconic temporary artworks of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Christo began his artistic training at the National Academy of Arts in Sofia, before moving to Vienna in 1957 and later to Paris. In Paris he encountered the avant-garde art scene and came into contact with artists such as Yves Klein and Jean Tinguely, whose radical approaches and experimental art forms influenced him. Christo’s early works included collages and assemblages, but it was his meeting with Jeanne-Claude in 1958 that marked the beginning of their joint career.
Christo and Jeanne-Claude began in the 1960s with their large-scale wrapping projects. An early example is “Rideau de Fer” (1962), in which they blocked a street in Paris with a metal wall. These works reflected the influence of the Arte Povera movement, led by artists such as Jannis Kounellis and Michelangelo Pistoletto, which transformed everyday materials and urban spaces into works of art.
