Hans Hollenbach’s 1965 oil painting Hitler en Göring, a 140 × 160 cm Pop Art work from the Netherlands, signed in the lower left, original edition and in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
Unique and rare painting "Hitler and Göring" by the Rotterdam-based Pop Art artist Hans Hollenbach (1943–1976). In this powerful work, Hollenbach confronts the viewer with the principal responsible for the bombing of Rotterdam on May 14, 1940, a traumatic event inextricably linked to the city where the artist lived and worked.
Hollenbach belongs to the first generation of Rotterdam Pop Art artists who, in the mid-1960s, drew inspiration from American Pop Art. In post-war Rotterdam, this movement developed into a raw, direct, and socially critical visual language, far removed from academic conventions. Hollenbach's work is free, outspoken, and unmistakably rooted in his time.
In addition to his paintings, often executed on large scale, such as this painting, Hollenbach also created spatial works in plastic and metal. His oeuvre also shows influences from American abstract expressionism, which gives his work extra power and dynamism. He frequently exhibited in group shows and collaborated with artists such as Jacob Zekveld, Woody van Amen, Daan van Golden, and Mathieu Ficheroux.
Until around 1970 Hans Hollenbach was actively present within the Dutch art circuit. His early death and the relatively short active period make his work relatively rare.
The canvas is in excellent condition: sturdy and undamaged. Lower left signed "Hollenbach '65".
