About the artist:
Paul Wunderlich (born March 10, 1927 in Eberswalde; died June 6, 2010 in Saint-Pierre-de-Vassols, Provence) was a German painter, draftsman, sculptor and graphic artist. In his neo-surrealist pictures and sculptures he mainly explored erotic and mythological themes.
In 1947 he became a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg, where he enrolled in the Free Graphics class with Willi Titze. His fellow students included Horst Janssen and Reinhard Drenkhahn. After an interruption, he resumed his studies in 1950, which he completed in 1951 with Willem Grimm.
Subsequently he worked as a lecturer at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts for lithography and etching techniques. Also in 1951 he printed for Emil Nolde ("Der König und seine Mannen", etching) and in 1952 for Oskar Kokoschka the graphics suite "Ann Eliza Reed" with eleven lithographs.
After an early, essentially realistic creative phase, he developed the characteristic style around 1959. His early works show fragmented, disproportionate bodies against an empty background.
In 1963 he returned to Hamburg and became (until 1968) — following Georg Gresko — Professor at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts (HfbK) and began in 1969, under the influence of Salvador Dalí, creating sculptures and bronzes.
Wunderlich lived and worked in Hamburg and Saint-Pierre-de-Vassols (Provence), where he died in 2010 after a brief serious illness.
