About the artist:
Paul Wunderlich (born 10 March 1927 in Eberswalde; died 6 June 2010 in Saint-Pierre-de-Vassols, Provence) was a German painter, draughtsman, sculptor, and graphic artist. He created, in his neo-surrealist paintings and sculptures, primarily erotic and mythological themes.
In 1947 he became a student at the Hamburg Academy of Arts, where he joined the class of Free Graphic Arts under Willi Titze. His fellow students included Horst Janssen and Reinhard Drenkhahn. After a break, he resumed his studies in 1950 and completed them in 1951 with Willem Grimm.
Thereafter he worked as a lecturer at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts (HfbK) teaching lithography and etching techniques. Also in 1951 he printed for Emil Nolde ("Der König und seine Mannen", etching) and in 1952 for Oskar Kokoschka the graphic suite "Ann Eliza Reed" with eleven lithographs.
After an early, essentially realist phase, around 1959 he developed his characteristic style. His early works show fragmented, disproportionate bodies against empty backgrounds.
In 1963 he returned to Hamburg and (until 1968) served as professor at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts (HfbK) as the successor to Georg Gresko, and began in 1969, under the influence of Salvador Dalí, creating sculptures and bronzes.
Wunderlich lived and worked in Hamburg and Saint-Pierre-de-Vassols (Provence), where he died in 2010 after a brief serious illness.
