About the artist:
Paul Wunderlich (born 10 March 1927 in Eberswalde; died 6 June 2010 in Saint-Pierre-de-Vassols, Provence) was a German painter, draftsman, sculptor and graphic artist. In his neo-surrealist paintings and sculptures he mainly dealt with erotic and mythological themes.
In 1947 he became a student at the School of Art in Hamburg, where he enrolled in the class Free Graphics with Willi Titze. His fellow students included Horst Janssen and Reinhard Drenkhahn. After a break, he resumed his studies in 1950, which he completed in 1951 with Willem Grimm.
Subsequently he worked as a lecturer at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts, teaching lithography and etching techniques. Also in 1951 he printed for Emil Nolde ("Der König und seine Mannen", etching) and in 1952 for Oskar Kokoschka the graphic suite "Ann Eliza Reed" with eleven lithographs.
After an early, largely realist phase, he developed from about 1959 the style that became characteristic for him. His early works show fragmented, disproportionate bodies against a blank background.
In 1963 he returned to Hamburg and served (until 1968) as a professor at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts (HfbK) as the successor of Georg Gresko, and in 1969 began, under the influence of Salvador Dalí, creating sculptures and three-dimensional works in bronze.
Wunderlich lived and worked in Hamburg and in Saint-Pierre-de-Vassols (Provence), where he died in 2010 after a short illness.
