Description from the seller
This is a painting by Ed Dukkers. Eduard Willem Anton Dukkers was born on 1 May 1923 in Zandvoort and died in 1996 in Amsterdam.
Dimensions: 25 x 32 cm
Dimensions with frame: 41 x 51 cm
Dukkers pursued his training at the Institute for Decorative Arts Education in Amsterdam and was largely autodidact as a painter. He worked as a painter, draftsman, and lithographer. Initially he worked in Zandvoort, but from 1940 he settled in Amsterdam. In 1946 he was selected by Willem Sandberg, director of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, for the exhibition Ten Young Painters, in which, among others, Karel Appel, Corneille and Rooskens participated.
As with many artists of his generation, early in Dukkers’s work there are expressionistic tendencies, but he soon developed a completely personal course. Literary and Surrealist themes came to the fore, with death, erotica, and rituals closely interwoven. Since 1956 Dukkers was a member of the artists’ group De Keerkring. In 1952 he received the Tetar van Elven travel grant, after which he undertook several foreign trips, notably to Greece.
In his entire oeuvre, the human being is central in general terms. From around 1985 his work shows increasing simplification and abstraction.
