“The Savoiarda”

Cardboard: 42 x 23 cm
The Savoiarda is a 19th-century painting executed in oil on cardboard, depicting a young traveling woman, a typical figure of 19th-century Northern Italy. The protagonist, captured in a simple and composed attitude, carries a hurdy-gurdy, a folk instrument tied to the musical tradition of the Alpine regions, particularly Savoy.
The work stands out for its intimate and realistic tone, attentive to the subject’s dignity rather than to picturesque anecdote. The sparse landscape and the measured use of color focus attention on the figure, conveying an image of quiet humanity and everyday life. The Savoiarda thus fits into the nineteenth-century sensibility towards themes of the people and humble life, with a participatory and respectful gaze.
