Johannes Theodorus (Jan) Toorop, Het Gebed, a 1924 lithograph in Cubism, signed in the plate, in a limited edition and framed, measuring 37 cm by 40 cm, with a religious theme, from the Netherlands, in reasonable condition.
Description from the seller
Johannes Theodorus (Jan) Toorop, also: Jean Theodor Toorop, (Poerworedjo (Nederlands-Indië), 20 December 1858 – The Hague, 3 March 1928) was one of the most important Dutch visual artists from the period 1880-1910.
- Education: the Polytechnische School in Delft (1876-1879), the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam (1880-1882) and the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Brussels (1882-1885).
At first he painted in an impressionistic style, but through pointillism he developed into a symbolist painter.
He was also active as a portraitist and designed ceramics, advertising posters and book bindings. Dutch Art Nouveau is often associated with his work. In the last twenty years of his life he was strongly inspired by Roman Catholicism.
Jan Toorop was the father of Charley Toorop, grandfather of the artist Edgar Fernhout and the filmmaker John Fernhout and great-grandfather of Rik Fernhout - four generations of artists.
This framed isography from 1924 shows signs of aging. When replacing the passe-partout this splendid work can last for many more years.
