Description from the seller
This is a Japanese decorative sculpture titled “Swinging Horse” (すいんぐ) by Zenichi (善一作).
The piece depicts a spirited horse mounted on a gently curved rocking base, combining traditional symbolism with a playful, modern design.
The horse stands with one foreleg raised, expressing vitality, strength, and forward movement. In Japanese culture, the horse has long symbolized success, prosperity, and protection. The rocking form (“swing”) adds a dynamic element, suggesting motion and balance, making this piece both elegant and charming.
The surface features a beautifully textured finish with a verdigris-style patina in soft turquoise tones. Subtle brown highlights evoke natural aging and give the sculpture a refined, antique character. The tactile surface and controlled oxidation effect suggest cast metal craftsmanship, likely bronze or a bronze alloy.
The sculpture is displayed on a traditional red felt mat and black lacquer-style stand, enhancing its presence and making it ideal for interior decoration. It works beautifully in both Japanese and Western interiors as a statement art object.
The wooden signature plaque reads “すいんぐ 善一作” (Swing – made by Zenichi), confirming the artist’s name.
Based on style and finish, this piece is estimated to date from the late Showa period (昭和後期, 1970s–1980s).
Artist Profile – Zenichi (善一):
Zenichi (善一) appears to be a Japanese sculptor specializing in decorative metal art objects. Works bearing this signature typically reflect traditional Japanese motifs—such as animals symbolizing fortune and strength—combined with modern display aesthetics suitable for contemporary interiors.
Although detailed biographical information is limited, the quality of casting, surface treatment, and balanced form suggest a skilled artisan working during the late Showa era (昭和後期, 1970s–1980s), a period when refined decorative bronze objects were popular for both domestic display and export markets.
