Description from the seller

Rare painting by Ayako Miyawaki (1905–1995), a renowned Japanese textile artist known for elevating the technique of appliqué to a form of modern art. The work depicts two fish, identified as saury (or san-ma), created by layering and sewing scraps of fabric onto a base of jute or hemp. Miyawaki called her creations nuno-e ("fabric paintings"). She used fragments of old kimonos, worn clothes and indigo-dyed fabrics, assembling them to create compositions inspired by everyday life. The signature "あ": At the bottom right of the piece you can see her characteristic red seal containing the hiragana character "あ" (A), the initial of her name Ayako. For her, this mark also recalled the interjection "Ah!", a symbol of the wonder and joy she felt in creating. Today, much of her work is preserved at the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art in Japan. Painting size: 15.4 cm x 37.3 cm.
The lot will be carefully packed and shipped with contracted couriers. For this lot, shipments outside the European Community are not made.
