Constant Anton Nieuwenhuys (Amsterdam, 21 July 1920 – Utrecht, 1 August 2005) was an influential Dutch figure in the arts—painter, sculptor, graphic artist, author and musician.
He studied at the School of Applied Arts and the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam and was one of the founders of the experimental group in the Netherlands and later of the international art movement CoBrA (1948–1951), which opposed traditional art and emphasized spontaneity and expression.
After his CoBrA period Constant focused in the 1950s mainly on spatial constructions and urban-planning ideas, which resulted in his famous utopian project New Babylon — a conceptual world city in which people, freed from labor, can fully develop their creativity.
In later years he returned to drawing and painting, with works that were strongly influenced by older masters through color and structure. Constant’s work was exhibited worldwide and he is regarded as one of the most important Dutch artists of the 20th century.
