Biography
Salvatore Fiume (Comiso, 23 October 1915 – Milan, 13 June 1997). He attended the Regio Istituto d’Arte del Libro in Urbino at a very young age, where he learned printing techniques. In 1949 in Milan, his first official exhibition, with the works “Islands of Statues” and “City of Statues,” attracted considerable interest from critics. This show allowed him to establish contacts with artistic and cultural institutions at an international level. On that occasion, one of his works was purchased for the Museum of Modern Art in New York and for the Jucker collection in Milan. The following year he was invited to the Venice Biennale: he exhibited the triptych Island of Statues, which earned him a cover on the American magazine Life. From his works one can sense an interest in Renaissance painting, particularly Piero della Francesca and Paolo Uccello. In 1953 he received commissions from Life and Time magazines. In 1962, one hundred paintings toured various museums in Germany. In 1973 he went to the Babyl Valley in Ethiopia, where he painted with marine anticorrosive varnishes a group of rocks. At the great retrospective of 1974 at the Royal Palace in Milan, he presented for the first time the African Mona Lisa, now housed in the Vatican Museums. This was followed by several exhibitions: in 1985 at Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome, in 1987 at the Sporting d’Hiver in Monte Carlo, and in 1991 at the International Architecture Show in Milan. As a sculptor, he debuted in 1994 with an exhibition in Milan. In fact, his approaches to sculpture traced back to the 1940s. His production includes works in stone, bronze, resin, wood, and ceramic, some of which are large-scale. Among them the bronze statue at the European Parliament in Strasbourg and the stone groups at the San Raffaele hospitals in Milan and Rome. He died in Milan on June 3, 1997. His works are preserved in the most important museums in the world."
