Description of the work
Completed in 1975, this Abstract Composition belongs to the late, fully mastered period of René Mels’s graphic œuvre. The paper surface is animated by an energetic superposition of black, nervous, incisive strokes that traverse the composition with great gestural freedom. These lines cross, entwine, and generate a dense rhythmic grid, shaping space without ever imprisoning it.
The colored washes, dominated by bluish, greenish, pinkish, and ochre tones, play an active role in building the image. Far from a simple background, they constantly dialogue with the line, creating zones of tension and breathing. The horizontal-dominant composition suggests a continuous flow, almost organic or landscape-like, with no explicit figurative reference. Light emanates from the paper’s white spaces, reinforcing depth and movement.
Overall, it testifies to a subtle balance between spontaneity of gesture and formal mastery. Each intervention seems to respond to the previous one, in a progression where drawing retains its expressive charge and vitality.
Artistic context
In the mid-1970s, René Mels deepens a research focused on the autonomy of the line and gesturality. After periods marked by more constructed and architectural abstraction, he develops a freer graphic writing, in which the line becomes energy, trajectory, and breath.
This 1975 work fully illustrates this advanced phase of his career. The drawing is no longer preparatory but constitutes the very place of plastic thought. Color, used with restraint and precision, reinforces the internal dynamics of the composition without altering its structural readability. This period foreshadows the artist’s very latest works, characterized by formal austerity and increased expressive intensity.
Biography of René Mels (1909–1977)
René Mels was a major figure in Belgian painting and printmaking of the twentieth century. Born in Herent, near Leuven, he trained at the Leuven Academy, then at Brussels, before continuing his teaching at La Cambre. His work, initially marked by Expressionism, gradually evolved toward a structured abstraction, then toward a language increasingly centered on line, rhythm, and matter.
An active member of Jeune Peinture belge and the Art Abstrait group, he fully participated in the postwar Belgian art scene’s renewal. His approach, based on a constant tension between constructive rigor and gestural freedom, gives his work remarkable coherence and intensity. René Mels died in 1977 in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, leaving behind a late production of great poetic and graphic force.”
