Description from the seller
A rediscovered masterwork: George Shalders (1826–1873) was an English landscape painter of the Victorian era, famous for his ability to portray rural scenes from Britain and Ireland.
Coming from a family heritage, this extraordinary oil painting on canvas is ready to find a new home. Purchased by my father a long time ago, this work captures the eye and enchants the spirit. It is a timeless work of art. Created in the late 1800s, it expresses the spirit of an era and at the same time preserves a freshness and vitality that keep it current. The unmistakable style, and the canvas itself measures about 30 x 51 cm (without the frame); the artist’s signature in the lower left attests to its importance. The painter George Shalders, known for his landscapes and sheep, was born in Portsmouth, England, where he was born, though he moved to London where he died and worked mainly, often depicting the Surrey and Hampshire areas.
The exact date of death is not indicated, but he was certainly born in 1826. He settled in London, painting landscapes, especially in Surrey and Hampshire, and traveling to Ireland. The style of George Shalders (1826-1873) is mainly landscape, characterized by evocative and detailed scenes, fitting into the context of 19th-century British art, often associated with the Napoleon III style (Second Empire) for some works, with a focus on rural and mountainous landscapes featuring shepherds and animals, painted in oil on canvas with great attention to detail. Upon his death in 1873, a charity auction was organized by Christie’s to support his three orphaned children.
A unique piece; it is a versatile work that fits into any setting, imparting a sophisticated and refined atmosphere. Its beauty makes it a focal point in any room, adding a touch of elegance and prestige. It is its details that make the difference. With a subtle peripheral frame despite the dimensions and its patina of time, it gives the painting a unique and authentic charm. The painting on the back of the canvas bears a number and a posthumous cartouche as well as an old repair. A note regarding a date that could be 1883 or 1888 is not in line with the presumed data, as stated above, of his death.
The painting is in generally good condition, with possible microscopic signs of time that emphasize its authenticity and history. An investment for the future that means not only enriching one's art collection but also making a prudent investment for the future. High-quality artworks, especially those by established artists, tend to appreciate over time.
The shipment will be made with a well-known tracked and insured courier, while the packing will be done professionally.
The frame visible in the photo is included as a courtesy and does not constitute an integral part of the artwork. Any damage to the frame will not be a valid basis for complaints or order cancellations.
