Description from the seller

This is a watercolor, created by the artist Benjamin Levy.

Dimensions: 32 x 37 cm
Dimensions with frame: 56 x 60 cm

Benjamin Levy was born in 1940 in Tel Aviv. He studied art in Israel with Abraham Yaskil, in Paris at the École de Montparnasse and in New York at the Pratt Graphic Art Center. After his studies he returned to Tel Aviv, where he established a studio. In 1965 the Levy family moved to New York, where he quickly achieved success and recognition. Today he lives and works alternately in New York, Tel Aviv and in the artists’ colony Ein Hod in Israel. Since the late 1960s he has had more than eighty solo exhibitions and participated in more than one hundred group exhibitions in Israel, the United States and Europe. His work is included in many private and public collections worldwide.

Levy derives much inspiration from his collection of family photographs, many dating from before his birth. The magic of these old images can be seen in the characteristic rigidity of his figures, the dreamlike quality of his paintings, and the theatrical staging of his portraits and scenes. Figures in full regalia are posed as if photographed, against a backdrop of curtains and wings. Communication takes place through gestures, looks and symbols; unspoken messages are sometimes depicted by a small winged messenger or a bird, a symbol of the human soul.
