With his incisive documentary approach to photography, Steve McCurry has captured some of the most iconic images of the 20th and 21st centuries. McCurry creates simple, representative photographs that aim to illuminate areas of the world and build narratives from honest representations of people and places. The photographer is known for his contributions to magazines like National Geographic, whose cover featured the “Afghan Girl,” his infamous 1985 image. The woman’s piercing green eyes and her position behind the Iron Curtain’s shadow strengthened the meaning of the photo. “I think the best way to photograph someone is to really look them in the eyes,” McCurry said. “The eyes are so expressive, they say so much about a person.” In recent years, McCurry has continued his journalistic investigations of the less fortunate in areas near his home, photographing housekeepers who suffer abuse across the United States.
