A.R. Penck, born Ralf Winkler on 5 October 1939 in Dresden, Germany, and died on 2 May 2017 in Zürich, Switzerland, was a renowned German painter, printer, sculptor, and jazz drummer. He is best known for his Neo-Expressionist style, characterized by simplified figures and forms, and neo-primitivist symbols and patterns. His work is unique due to his primitive stick-figures and signs.
Penck developed a visual language based on a simple system of signs, which he called 'standart'. This language was both 'universal' and 'democratic', and was developed in response to the trauma of World War II and the subsequent dystopia of the German Democratic Republic. Despite the oppressive communist government, Penck and his peers continued to create avant-garde art, which often led to surveillance by the secret police.
Penck's work has been offered at auction several times, with prices reaching up to 687,211 USD, depending on the size and medium of the artwork. In 2017 the average price for a Penck painting at auction was $113,412; in 2020 that rose to a record $138,071. In 2022, the average price of a Penck painting exploded to $250,360.
