WORK DESCRIPTION

“Sofie” is a monumental artwork by Dirk de Bruycker, one of Belgium’s most recognized contemporary artists, whose work has achieved international acclaim. The piece depicts an industrial-architectural motif of a watermill with a water wheel, rendered in an expressive, emotional and gestural manner characteristic of his mature work.

The title “Sofie” likely refers to a personal memory of the artist – perhaps the name of a close person, an inspiration, or symbolically indicating a place or experience important in his creative life. Dirk de Bruycker often gave his works feminine names or titles suggesting personal or emotional references, linking memory with the creative process.

The composition balances drawing and painting. The intensity of the gesture, the contrast of materials, and the tonal tension make the work an autonomous artistic statement rather than a preparatory sketch.

TECHNIQUE AND MEDIA

The work was executed in mixed media on heavyweight paper.

Drawing layer:
• charcoal, natural and compressed
• dry pigment / soft pastels
• Conté pencil
• parts manually blended to achieve gesture dynamics

Painting layer:
• oil or oil-resin paint
• linseed oil as binder
• balsamic turpentine for thinning
• possible use of natural resins (e.g., damar)
• intense reds with occasional impasto texture
• pigment bleeding through to the verso indicating an authentic, expressive creative process

SUPPORT

Heavyweight fine art paper, likely mould-made or semi-mould-made, cotton rag. It is cream-toned, highly absorbent, and responds strongly to painting media, allowing the artist to fully exploit gesture, texture, and color saturation, achieving effects not possible on traditional canvas.

FORMAT AND PRESENTATION

The impressive 124 × 94 cm format gives the work a statement-wall character, dominating the visual space of a room. Ideal for:
• Modern living room
• Executive office or study
• Hotel foyer
• Premium restaurant
• Representative spaces

The designer frame underscores the monumental character of the work and allows immediate display.
