Description from the seller
Japanese Kuro-Raku Tea Bowl (Chawan) - Glossy Black Glaze - Signed with Tomobako
A striking Japanese Kuro-Raku (Black Raku) tea bowl, traditionally used in the Japanese tea ceremony (Chanoyu). This piece features a deep, lustrous black glaze with subtle reddish-brown "kiln change" (yo-hen) highlights, characteristic of the high-temperature "Hikidashi-kuro" (pulled-out black) technique.
・The Glaze: The surface exhibits a rich, undulating texture with a beautiful gloss that reflects light elegantly. Small pinholes and natural irregularities in the glaze provide a tactile experience, highly valued in the wabi-sabi aesthetic.
・The Form: Hand-formed (without a potter's wheel), giving it a warm, organic shape that fits perfectly in the hands. The rim is slightly uneven, echoing the natural landscape.
・The Foot (Kodai): The base is unglazed, revealing the coarse, sandy texture of the Raku clay. There is a clear artist’s seal (hanko) stamped near the foot.
・The Box (Tomobako): It comes with its original signed wooden storage box, which authenticates the piece and adds significant value for collectors.
Condition
In excellent condition. No chips, cracks, or repairs. Please refer to the high-resolution photos for details on the glaze texture and kiln marks.
