Description from the seller
Toon de Haas (1929 – 2015) moved in 1955 from Texel to Amstelveen to further develop painting as he went along. For his livelihood he was a graphic designer and painted portraits on commission. But for himself he painted everything he saw around him: still lifes, corners of his studio and landscapes around Amsterdam. "I understand the things that exist by going to paint them." So said Toon de Haas. He also kept returning to Texel. "By taking a step back, you see it differently." He painted watercolors and oil paintings of ‘tuunwallen’, fences, paths and boeten.
Toon usually painted on site. His work is characterized by sturdy, swift and bold brushstrokes and a rich color palette. Shorty before his death Toon de Haas told a journalist: "Painting is part of me, as long as I can hold a brush, I will paint." In 2016 the municipality of Amstelveen named a street after Toon de Haas.
