This is a drawing in mixed media by Jan Sluijters (1881-1957). The fine pencil lines form the basis of the composition, while he adds subtle, colored accents with pastel, among other things in the eyes and the collars of the figure. These details give the work extra liveliness and make the whole piece particularly engaging.
In addition to landscapes and cityscapes, Sluijters produced a lot of portraits in particular. He is especially known for [this], although he worked in a variety of styles, his art remained figurative in nature. Jan Sluijters is among the pioneers of modernism in the Netherlands. In his ongoing quest for new forms of expression, he introduced a novel use of light and color in Dutch painting and made an important contribution to the development of modern art in the Netherlands.
