Artist KARL LAGASSE
Karl Lagasse, born on April 4, 1981 in Paris, is a French artist. He is the creator of the sculpture One Dollar as well as the trophy for the 43rd Deauville American Film Festival.
Artistic career
Karl Lagasse’s career began in 1996 with the sale of his first work in Antwerp, at the age of 15.
A few years later, in 2003, he prepared his first Paris exhibition where he displayed works mixing collages and painting, as Yvaral Vasarely’s son suggested to him during their meeting in 1998.
He began sculpture in 2004 and drew inspiration from watching White Nights[Which ones?]. He then sought his own style and began the “Buildings” series, totem-like works made from different materials. That same year, he left Paris to settle in Normandy.
In 2006, Isy Brachot (famous Brussels gallery) dedicated an exhibition to him. One painting did not find a buyer. Karl Lagasse offered it to a amateur who could not acquire it.
In 2008, he returned to Paris to exhibit at L’Espace Pierre Cardin. Paintings, sculptures and photographs were presented. A film on the creation of the works was also screened.
2009, the year of the creation of one of the artist’s most iconic works, the One Dollar. A work resulting from his admiration for the United States but also symbolizing what can be done with a single dollar; “Make art with 1$.”
In 2010, he was chosen to represent the town of Deauville (Normandy) at the World Equestrian Championship “Horsemania” held in Lexington (USA), a sister city of the Norman seaside resort, for which he created a sculpture. After One Dollar, whose success was international, he presented another work that would also become iconic, the “Cryptogram One.” It was at the Art Monaco fair in 2011 that the public discovered it.
To celebrate Cannes Film Festival’s 65th anniversary in 2012, he created a 2.80 m Building 60 cm wide in cement, wood, glass and photos in collaboration with Corbis and exhibited it at the Carlton Cinema Club. The artists present at the festival were invited to sign the piece, and leave a message. This included José Garcia, Michel Hazanavicius, Bérénice Bejo, Gad Elmaleh, as well as Cuba Gooding Jr., Tim Roth, Matthew McConaughey, and Zac Efron.
