Engelen is an oil on canvas by Matthieu Wiegman (1886-1971), created in 1900-1910, of Dutch origin, sold with frame by Galerie, an original edition depicting a religious theme with two angels and signed in the lower right, in good condition, measuring 119 cm by 89 cm.
Description from the seller
This is an oil painting on canvas by Matthieu Wiegman. It concerns a religious work. It aligns with the kind of imagery he also used in his mosaics and stained-glass windows. The work is almost staged as if it were a stained-glass window in a church. In the painting two angels can be seen with halos around their heads, which emphasizes the religious and spiritual character of the work.
Matthieu Wiegman, together with Leo Gestel and Arnout Colnot, would grow to become one of the leading representatives of the Bergense School. His brother, Piet Wiegman, was also part of this circle of artists. In the work of both brothers the influence of Paul Cézanne is clearly recognizable.
Dimensions: 99 x 79 cm
Dimensions with frame: 119 x 98 cm
Lower right signed
