Description from the seller
Collection of smoking pipes with two original Brebbia pipe stands (Italy)
General description
The collection consists of about 20 briar smoking pipes of various shapes and makes, accompanied by two original Brebbia pipe stands from the historic Italian house Brebbia.
The set represents a typical lot for a domestic collection or tobacconist shop from the years between 1970 and 2000, when the popularity of smoking pipes was still widespread in Europe.
The presence of the two Brebbia pipe stands allows a complete and orderly display of the collection, a feature appreciated by both collectors and pipe retailers.
The Brebbia pipe stands
Manufacturer: Brebbia
Place of production: Brebbia, Varese – Italy
Brebbia manufactory was founded in 1947 by Enea Buzzi, one of the most important Italian post-war master pipe makers. In addition to briar pipes, the company produced high-quality smoking accessories, including pipe stands, presses, and desktop supports.
Main pipe stand
Type: linear display pipe stand
Capacity: about 20 pipes
Material: solid polished wood
Structure: lower base with shaped rests and a top plate with holes for the stems
This type of pipe stand was very common in Italian tobacconists in the 1970s and 1980s, where it was used to display new pipes or private collections.
Secondary pipe stand
Type: shaped tabletop pipe stand
Capacity: 5–6 pipes
Material: solid wood
Features: semicircular structure with notches shaped for the pipe heads
This model mainly served decorative and domestic purposes, often placed on desks or living room furniture.
The pipes in the collection
The lot includes about 20 natural briar pipes, finished in various ways:
- smooth pipes with natural flame grain
- rustic or sanded pipes
- pipes with a metal band
- classic billiard and bent shapes
- some artistic or artisanal forms
The pipes presumably come from European and Italian medium-market and artisanal productions, typical of tobacconists between the 1970s and 1990s.
The briar used is Erica arborea, the traditional material employed in the manufacture of quality pipes for its heat resistance and its ability to absorb tobacco moisture.
Collectible value
Value of the pipe stands
Brebbia pipe stands for 20 pipes
Estimated value: 50 – 70 euros
Brebbia shaped tabletop pipe stand
Estimated value: 35 – 50 euros
Value of the pipes
Medium-range commercial and artisanal pipes
Average value per piece: 10 – 15 euros
