TROBADORS |Antoni Clave
The title "TROBADORS" refers to court poets and musicians active in Southern France and Catalonia between the 11th and 13th centuries. The work combines lithography with carborundum (silicon carbide) etching to create a tactile and heavy surface. Deep blacks and muted reds are used to evoke the atmosphere of medieval tapestries and ancient manuscripts.
Artist Profile:
Antoni Clave was born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1913. He worked as an apprentice painter from age 13 while attending evening art school. After working in illustration and advertising, he focused on painting at age 18. He fought in the Spanish Civil War in 1936 and fled to Montparnasse, France, in 1939. His meeting with Picasso in 1944 had a decisive influence on his work. He gained international recognition from the 1950s, winning awards at the Venice Biennale (1956) and Sao Paulo Biennale (1957). In 1984, he represented Spain at the Venice Biennale. He worked across painting, objects, sculpture, and printmaking until his death in 2005.
