Description from the seller
SAILOR KING OF PEN Naginata-Togi Ebonite "Mouko" - LIMITED EDITION 193/500
I am putting up for sale an exceptional Sailor King of Pen Naginata-Togi Ebonite "Mouko" (猛虎 - Fierce Tiger), released in October 2024.
Numbered #193/500 pieces worldwide. Individual serial number engraving.
Sixth edition of the prestigious Naginata-Togi Ebonite series.
The design draws inspiration from the famous painting "Tiger" by Jakuchu Ito (1716-1800), master of the Rinpa school and one of the greatest animal painters of the Edo period. The striking contrast between deep black and bright yellow evokes the majestic tiger stripes.
The Mouko nib is a 21-carat gold mass nib, in King of Pen (KOP) size #9, the largest Sailor nib, size NMF (Medium-Fine).
Naginata-Togi: special grinding inspired by the samurai halberd
Offers a spectacular variation of line width from ultra-fine to ultra-wide depending on writing angle
Ideal for calligraphy, expressive signatures, and creative writing
Requires an expert artisan for its manufacture
Body in genuine ebonite
The Chirashi technique (散らし), literally meaning "dispersion" or "scattering", is a sophisticated method of working with colored ebonite developed and mastered by Sailor.
For Mouko, three colors of ebonite are meticulously selected: yellow-brown evoking the tiger’s fur, deep black for the stripes, and white added to accentuate contrast and brightness, faithful to Jakuchū's original work.
The process is complex: the different colors are layered in multiple passes, creating a three-dimensional structure within the material itself. The layers are artfully arranged to reproduce tiger stripe patterns, with particular attention to tones and contrast. Once assembled, they are smoothed and polished to create a homogeneous surface while preserving visible depth.
The result is spectacular: each Mouko features a unique stripe pattern, as the Chirashi technique guarantees natural variability. No two pens are identical. The colors are not on the surface but run through the entire thickness of the material, creating remarkable visual and tactile richness. The effect is not flat but textured, with a depth reminiscent of Ito Jakuchū’s painting technique. With use and polishing over time, new nuances may even appear.
Sailor notes that small specks may appear due to foreign matter contained in the raw materials. These are not flaws but natural characteristics of artisanal material, evidence of the authenticity of the process.
