Edward Hopper:
Edward Hopper (1882–1967) was a significant American painter and printmaker, whose realistic depictions of urban and rural life in the United States made him an important figure of 20th-century realism. His works, known for their atmosphere of loneliness and isolation, are deeply rooted in American culture and influenced many artists of his time and beyond.

Hopper’s art shows clear influences from European painters such as Édouard Manet and Edgar Degas. From Manet he borrowed the interest in everyday scenes, and from Degas the use of unusual viewpoints and the focus on urban life. The influence of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec is also evident in Hopper’s work, particularly in his portrayal of figures in interior spaces.

In the United States Hopper was strongly influenced by the Ashcan School, a group of artists including Robert Henri and John Sloan who depicted the everyday life of urban Americans. This movement, which also included artists like George Bellows and Edward Weston, laid the groundwork for Hopper’s later works that often depict people in anonymous, urban environments.

Hopper’s portrayals of architecture and urban scenes have parallels with the work of Charles Sheeler, a co-founder of Precisionism, who emphasized clear, geometric representations of buildings and industrial landscapes. There is also kinship with the works of Reginald Marsh, who likewise captured the urban American landscape and everyday life, though with a stronger focus on the city’s dynamism and movement.
