Description from the seller
The Vigil is a 70x100 cm painting by contemporary artist Ernest García. “The Vigil” sits in a territory of poetic tension between sleep and consciousness, between the domestic and the metaphysical. The scene, apparently serene, hides a silent unease that recalls the European surrealist imagination, evoking echoes of René Magritte and Giorgio de Chirico, reinterpretations from a contemporary sensibility and a palette with a clearly Fauvist lineage.
In the foreground, two white cats — with amber, piercing, almost human gazes — occupy the central composition. They are not mere animals: they function as symbolic guardians, alert figures suspended in a stopped time. Their whiteness, modeled with cool blues and dense shadows, makes them sculptural presences, almost marble-like, reinforcing a sense of ceremonial stillness.
The architectural space is built with a theatrical logic: bold planes of color, slightly altered perspectives, and an atmosphere of suspended silence. In the background, a female figure with her back to the viewer contemplates an industrialized city marked by vertical chimneys, elements that recall De Chirico’s metaphysical architecture. The distance between the woman and the cats creates an open narrative: who watches whom? What does this scene await?
The use of color is decisive. The blazing reds, the golden yellows, and the deep blues do not seek naturalism but emotional intensity. The Fauvist influence manifests in the freedom of color and in the bluntness of contrasts. The light is not realistic: it is conceptual. It illuminates as revelation, not as a physical phenomenon.
The decorative vase introduces an ornamental wink that dialogues with the classical pictorial tradition of the still life, but here it appears displaced, almost as a symbolic object within a mental stage. Each element seems carefully placed to reinforce a sense of inner vigilance: a state of conscious alertness in front of the external world.
“The Vigil” is a work that articulates tradition and contemporaneity, figuration and symbolism. It possesses a strong museum presence and an open narrative character that invites interpretation. It is not a complacent image; it is a scene that observes the viewer with the same intensity with which the viewer observes it.
A piece of notable conceptual load and great visual power, ideal for collections that value the dialogue between historic surrealism and contemporary painting with high chromatic impact.
