Description from the seller
Finnish conceptual artist and cultural commentator Juha-Pekka Väisänen, a graduate of the Helsinki Academy of Fine Arts whose work has been exhibited internationally for more than three decades, wrote about Broadwell’s painting Primal Existence in an article during the Helsinki exhibition:
“You can see Melissa Broadwell's small color abstraction painting. It will rise to the forefront at the exhibition with its own exceptional energy.”
Melissa Broadwell – Primal Existence
Original oil painting on canvas
Size: 20 × 16 inches (50.8 × 40.6 cm)
This original abstract expressionist work was created without a predetermined composition. During the painting process, Broadwell experienced a strong sense of connection between the spiritual and physical realms, a recurring theme within her practice. The painting explores primal energy and the relationship between ancient instinct and human presence.
As the forms emerged organically, a shape resembling an elephant became visible within the composition. The artist subtly emphasized this presence while also developing a human element—legs wearing a high heel that transitions into a boot—suggesting the intersection of primal nature and human identity.
The work reflects Broadwell’s painting method, in which multiple pigments are loaded onto the brush and blended directly on the surface, allowing color and movement to evolve naturally.
The painting has been professionally varnished for protection and color depth.

Melissa Broadwell (American, b. 1966) is a United States-based professional abstract expressionist painter whose work explores perception, light, and emergent form through a materially rigorous process. A self-taught autistic artist, she began painting in 2021, developing a practice rooted in nonlinear creation and chromatic layering.
Broadwell does not pre-plan compositions. She builds her paintings directly on the canvas, loading multiple pigments onto the brush at once and allowing color to interact in real time. This method produces micro-variations in surface and tone that shift dramatically under changing light conditions. Her work is particularly reactive to full-spectrum illumination, revealing depth, luminosity, and spatial movement that remain subtle in ambient light.
For Broadwell, painting is as natural and involuntary as breathing—an instinctive, embodied act that precedes conscious intention. Themes of interconnectedness, generational memory, resilience, and inner transformation emerge organically through this process. Rather than illustrating narrative, Broadwell constructs environments of energy where color and gesture generate psychological and emotional resonance.
Broadwell has exhibited internationally, including participation in the Aswan International Painting Symposium, where her paintings were prominently displayed on the historic Philae Temple grounds. She has also exhibited in Helsinki during Night of the Arts at Kaapelitehdas, with the opening attended by the Egyptian ambassador.

Critical Quote
Arthur Milton Robins American painter known for his vast array and depiction of cityscapes, inspired by New York City commented on Broadwell’s intuitive process:
“The reason your art is good is because you bypassed the mental gymnastics and over-education most artists go through, so you are free to connect to the universal creative spirit in a free way.”
