About the photographer:
Elliott Landy (1942)
A graduate of the Bronx High School of Science and Baruch College of the City University of New York, he began his photographic career working with underground newspapers to express his own “visual voice” in support of the growing anti-war sentiment across the United States at the end of the 1960s.
His press credentials and his camera not only allowed him access to the political scene but also let him personally immerse himself in the new rock counterculture. Albert Grossman, who guided the careers of many of the most popular and famous folk and rock artists, including Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Peter, Paul and Mary, Richie Havens and The Band, had seen Landy’s photos of Janis Joplin and invited him to photograph The Band. These photographs were used for the album Music From Big Pink. At that time, he met Bob Dylan and his photograph of him graced the September 1968 cover of the Saturday Evening Post.
In the following years, his famous images included portraits of Bob Dylan (Nashville Skyline), The Band (Music From Big Pink), Janis Joplin (Big Brother & The Holding Company: Cheap Thrills), Van Morrison (Moondance), Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Joan Baez, Eric Clapton, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Frank Zappa, John Lee Hooker, and many others.
His iconic photographs of Dylan and The Band during their residence and recording years in the little artist colony of Woodstock, New York, as well as his cover of the Woodstock Festival of 1969, captivated a new generation seeking spiritual and artistic freedom. His images became inseparable from the town, the famous 1969 music festival, and the utopian spirit of the Woodstock generation.
Since 1967, Landy’s works have been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world and published on the covers of major American and international magazines and newspapers, including the New York Times, Life, Rolling Stone and the Saturday Evening Post.
He is represented worldwide by Magnum Photos, Getty, and several other local photo agencies.
He is the author of 8 books, including his latest monograph, The Band Photographs, 1968–1969, which is the most-funded photographic book in Kickstarter history.
In 1990, Landy produced and directed a prize-winning video that appealed to both children and adults, “Table Manners For Everyday Use” (Table Manners Site).
Around 1997, he launched a column and a website to recommend positive, life-affirming films, as well as films featuring strong, loving, accomplished women. The site still exists but has been on pause since 1998. UpliftingFilms.com
He created a new interactive music-and-video application, LandyVision, which lets the user blend still images and video with music to create a new form of musical and visual experience. Its launch was planned for late 2018.
After years of metaphysical observation, Landy developed and offers meditations titled “Sharing Stillness,” in which he transmits a non-physical spiritual energy enabling a rapid attainment of a deep meditative state.
