Description from the seller
THE GAME OF EUROPEAN POLITICS: WARS, DYNASTIES AND INTRIGUES IN THE LOW COUNTRIES
Published in Antwerp in 1565, the Commentarii of Lodovico Guicciardini represent one of the first major Italian chronicles dedicated to the political and military events of northern Europe in the midst of the era of wars between France, the Empire, and the Spanish monarchy. The work reconstructs with analytical spirit and a almost journalistic gaze the events that, from the Treaty of Cambrai in 1529 up to 1560, marked the history of the Low Countries and the European political balance. Written by a privileged observer resident in Antwerp, a nerve center of trade and international diplomacy, this chronicle anticipates the modern historiographic method based on direct observation and analysis of political dynamics. The Willem Silvius edition, printed in the same year as the Venetian princeps of Niccolò Bevilacqua, testifies to the rapid European diffusion of the work and to the importance of the Italian community in the Netherlands in the sixteenth century.
MARKET VALUE
The sixteenth-century editions of Guicciardini’s Commentarii are less common than the more famous Descrittione di tutti i Paesi Bassi (1567), but they retain an increasing interest among collectors of Renaissance historiography and books on the history of the Netherlands. Complete and well-preserved copies of the 1565 editions or the immediate reissues of 1566 typically range between 1,300 and 1,600 euros on the international antiquarian market.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION AND CONDITION
Contemporary soft parchment binding with a manuscript title on the spine; blue marbled edges. CONTEXT AND SIGNIFICANCE
This work constitutes one of the first major historical narratives focused on the politics of the Low Countries during the height of the Habsburg dominion. The three books that make up the work reconstruct the events from the Treaty of Cambrai in 1529 that led to political and religious tensions which would later drive the Dutch revolt against the Spanish crown. Guicciardini observes these events from Antwerp, then one of the most important commercial and cultural centers in Europe, and offers a unique perspective that blends Italian sensibility with direct knowledge of the Flemish reality. The work is characterized by a lively chronicling style and notable attention to diplomatic relations, military campaigns, and the dynastic balances among France, the Empire, and Spain. In this sense the Commentarii anticipate the great success of the Descrittione di tutti i Paesi Bassi (1567), which would become one of the most influential texts on the geography and history of the region. The Antwerp publication, the economic capital of the North in the sixteenth century, also testifies to the importance of Italian networks in the Flemish region where Florentine merchants and intellectuals played a leading role in disseminating humanist culture.
BIOGRAPHY OF THE AUTHOR
Lodovico Guicciardini (Florence, 1521 – Antwerp, 1589) was a merchant, humanist, and historian belonging to the famous Florentine Guicciardini family. Moving to the Netherlands at a young age for commercial activities, he settled in Antwerp, where he developed a deep knowledge of the region’s history and geography. His works, including the Commentarii and the celebrated Descrittione di tutti i Paesi Bassi (1567), combine direct observation, geographical interest, and historical analysis. Thanks to his privileged position within the Italian community in Antwerp, Guicciardini could collect firsthand information on the political and commercial events of his time, becoming one of the main witnesses of life in the Netherlands in the sixteenth century.
PRINTING HISTORY AND CIRCULATION
The Commentarii were first published in 1565 in Venice by Niccolò Bevilacqua. In the same year appeared the Antwerp edition printed by Willem Silvius, a printer active in producing historical and geographical works for Antwerp’s international audience. The work enjoyed rapid European circulation and was reissued in 1566 in Venice and in other cities, in addition to being translated into Latin and German in the following years. The success of the Commentarii helped consolidate Guicciardini’s reputation as an interpreter of the political reality of the Netherlands and opened the way to the publication of his best-known work, the Descrittione di tutti i Paesi Bassi (1567), which would become one of the foundational texts on the region’s history and geography.
