Description from the seller
Title
Kumi Sugai – “Complex” – E.A. (Artist’s Proof) – Hand Signed – Geometric Abstract Print – Framed
⸻
Description
Kumi Sugai (1919–1996) was a prominent Japanese painter and printmaker who became an important figure in the post-war Paris art scene. After moving to France in the 1950s, Sugai developed a distinctive style that evolved from calligraphic abstraction into bold geometric compositions characterized by clean lines and strong color contrasts.
This work, titled “Complex,” exemplifies Sugai’s mature geometric abstraction. The composition combines a crescent-like form, diagonal striped elements, and a vivid green circle. The balanced arrangement of primary and secondary colors creates a dynamic visual tension typical of Sugai’s later works.
The print is an E.A. (Épreuve d’Artiste / Artist’s Proof) edition.
It is hand-signed “SUGAI” in pencil on the lower right and marked “E.A.” on the lower left.
The sharp registration and vivid ink colors reflect the high quality of the printing technique used.
Sugai’s works are held in major international collections, including The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, and the Centre Pompidou, Paris, and remain highly sought after by collectors of post-war abstract art.
