Italian artist Sandro Chia, title Mistero, an aquaforte and aquatinta on 350 g Hahnemühle paper, 80 × 60 cm, circa 2002, depicting a monumental nude in Transavanguardia style with edge foxing and restoration needed.
Description from the seller
The artwork by the famous Italian artist Sandro Chia is titled "Mistero".
Title: Mistero.
Date of creation: There are several editions of this subject, dated between roughly 1990 and 2003."
The exact year can vary depending on the edition.
Technique: It is an etching and aquatint on paper (350 g Hahnemühle paper).
Subject: Typical of Chia's Transavanguardia style, the work depicts a monumental nude figure in a dynamic pose against a vibrant yellow background, with a small stylized figure (resembling a dog) in red in the lower left.
These specks on the edge are called foxing (or bloom).
It is a form of oxidation or micro-fungi that affect old or high-quality paper (such as the Hahnemühle used by Chia) when exposed to humidity or frames with untreated wooden backs.
The damage is not catastrophic and, fortunately, is confined to the edges of the piece.
Aesthetic solution: mount a passe-partout to cover the damaged margins. The work will look perfect to the eye, even though for an experienced collector the flaw will remain "under" the card.
