Description from the seller
Andreas Tiraquellus (André Tiraqueau)
Commentaries, in the Parisian Curia of Senator Venice, at Dominico Lilio, 1555.
Quarto (15.5 × 10.5 cm); pp. (30), 84 [i.e. 60,168].
Printer's mark on the title page, ancient handwritten annotations on the title page, woodcut initials, rear binding with a dovetail in the spine.
Rare and important legal Cinquecento by the famous French humanist and jurist André Tiraqueau (1488-1558), counsellor of the Parliament of Paris and a figure of great influence in the formation of European common law.
The work constitutes a detailed juridical-philological commentary on Justinian’s Digest, with insights into the legal meanings of language and the interpretation of Roman law in 16th-century practice.
Venetian edition printed by Dominicus Lilius, a printer active in the leading legal editions of the Renaissance. A not uncommon work on the international antiquarian market, particularly sought after by collectors of Cinquecentoes, ancient law, and legal humanism.
Genuine and complete copy, with physiological signs of age, light browning and wear consistent with the period; rear binding with wear to the boards and edges, interior fresh with normal signs of time, overall good conservation for a 16th-century volume.
Fascinating document of Renaissance European legal culture.
