Description from the seller
Antique Indo-Persian Incense Burner – Engraved Brass – approx. 1900
This particularly decorative antique incense burner is a fine example of traditional North Indian metal craftsmanship from the late 19th to early 20th century. The object is made of solid brass and fully hand-engraved with a refined combination of floral arabesques, geometric patterns and figurative panels.
The ball-shaped bowl rests on a separate stand with three spherical legs. In this bowl a small piece of charcoal was traditionally placed on which resin incense such as frankincense, loban or aromatic herbs was burned. The larger engraved pot serves as a decorative cover that retains the heat and slowly disperses the fragrance.
The engraving shows a rich mix of decorative motifs typical of Indo-Persian ornamentation. In addition to floral scrolls and geometric patterns, the object also features figurative panels with a mythological animal or bird, a motif that regularly appears in metalwork from Kashmir and North India.
The object is handmade from hammered brass and then carefully engraved. The natural patina and signs of use give the piece an authentic character that suits its age.
Due to its sculptural form, rich decoration and complete set with stand, this is a particularly attractive collectible that is both functional and decorative.
Dimensions: H 17 cm x Ø 11 cm
Weight: 1440 grams
Condition: good antique condition with normal signs of use and aging and a beautiful natural patina. It is securely packed for smart shipping, sent by registered mail and insured with track and trace.
